Black Chandelier Cake

Assembly

With all of the pieces in place, it was time to assemble the cake. We had a case base covered in fancy gold foil, but we decided to add a little extra insurance. I cut about ten inches off of a 5/8-inch thick wooden dowel, and then drilled a pilot hole in one end. It would have been easier to use a drill press, but since I didn't have one, I had to go at it freehand. It took me two tries. I also drilled a hole in the center of my cake base, and then screwed the two together, using a metal washer on the bottom to make sure the screw didn't dig into the cardboard. Since I already had holes drilled into my plastic hexagons, it was a simple matter to line up the holes with the dowel and push it through.

Make sure the Alice pictures alternate with the honeycomb pattern. We decided it looked a lot better than lining them up. It was at this point that we also piped black edges onto the cake with royal icing. And by me, I mean my friend Susan, because I have absolutely no talent whatsoever with royal icing. She also applied a pink ribbon to the bottom of each cake layer, using leftover buttercream as glue.
