Beastie the BSD Daemon Cake

The Shoes: Outside

Time to decorate the shoes. You actually only need a small amount of green fondant. I've also seen his shoes presented in yellow, but I prefer green. Roll out a sheet of green fondant, at least 2 to 3 inches wider on all sides than the shoes. Don't worry, you can trim away the excess. I marked out with a knife where the dowels would stick through the shoes, and then lifted it over, punched through, and settled the fondant in place.

I formed the fondant around the shoes with my hands. Fondant is pretty elastic and very forgiving (in some instances), so it forms pretty easily around the shoes. In fact, it will show a lot of imperfections from the Rice Krispies if you're not careful, so either use a thick sheet of fondant, or cover the shoes with frosting first. With the fondant formed around the shoes, go ahead and cut away the excess with a paring knife. You probably don't need to be all that careful, since the edge is about to be covered up anyway, but try anyway. You need the practice.

Time for the trim. You'll want a bit of white fondant rolled out, with a nice, straight edge on one of the long sides. When you form this over the toes of the shoes, it may not end up perfectly perpendicular on both sides. That's okay, a little diagonal looks good. Go ahead and trim away the excess from that too. You may also want to use a little corn syrup to stick it all together.

To make the shoes look like they have soles, you'll need two ribbons of white fondant, one for each shoe. You could just use one ribbon, but it would have to be really long, and you'd still have a seam somewhere. If you use two ribbons, then you can make a seam in the front and the back, which will help to add to the illusion of having two seperate shoes. Glue these ribbons on with corn syrup.

You'll also need two white circles for the sides of his shoes because, I suspect, Beastie wears Converse Shoes. Or at the very least, shoes that look a lot line Cons. You'll also want a few tiny strips of white ribbon for the shoe laces. I only made a couple of laces, because his body is going to be covering the rest. Of course, these will all also be glued on with corn syrup.

At this point, I felt really good about Beastie. The shoes were so perfect, we took a lot of photos of them, and I made sure to show my wife when she showed up. Sadly, they would be the only part of the cake that I would end up being truly proud of.
