Beastie the BSD Daemon Cake

The Shoes: Inside

With the skeleton in place, it was time to start the actual culinary construction. We decided to get the shoes installed before even touching the cake. I cut out a shoe template from a leftover cardboard cake round, and used it to cut the shape from a large square of Rice Krispie Treat. The shoe pattern was drawn freehand, but I think I did a pretty good job on it. The cardboard pattern would later be used as a base, to keep the food seperate from the wooden base.

I also trimmed up the shoes a little, to round them off on the toe end. Rather than seperating them, I just cut a little chunk from the middle, to make them look like seperate shoes.

I had already drilled holes in the cardboard shoe template, to line up with the dowels. Since I knew it would be a lot harder to punch holes through Rice Krispies than through cake, I decided to use those holes to drill holes in the Rice Krispies too. Yes, I cleaned the drill bit first. This is food that we're talking about, and I've only ever used this bit for cake anyway.

With the shoes trimmed and drilled, I fitted them onto the dowels. Before I did this, I sprayed the dowels with cooking spray, and them wiped them down with a paper towel. Since dowels are usually just a little fuzzy when you buy them from the store, and even washing them won't take care of that (yes, I washed the dowels first), the cooking spray helps keep the fuzz in line.
