Beastie the BSD Daemon Cake

The Skeleton

If there's one thing that we learned from the Tux Cake, it's that structural stability is key. In this case it's even more important, because this cake is pretty top-heavy. Keeping that in mind, I decided to make a simple skeletal structure for the cake. It wouldn't run the entire length of the cake, just enough to keep it from falling over.

I decided to bolt two dowels to the base board, and then another board on top of them. The top board would be to keep the head from falling over. The dowels were about 8 inches long. You'll want to drop pilot holes into the ends of the dowels, to keep them from splitting. This is most easily accomplished with a drill press, but if you decide to go at it freehand, be careful!

Beastie's shoes are right next to each other. This is good, because the dowels need to be one in front of the other, instead of side-by-side. The head is going to lean forward, and each dowel will be supporting the other. Keep this in mind when you drill the holes in the board for the dowels to attach to.

You can see that we have the base board clamped together. This is because the floor boards were a little thin, and we were worried about them coming apart during transportation. We cut out a piece of plywood the same size, and used the screws for the dowels to hold it all together.
