Beastie the BSD Daemon Cake

The Hardware

You need a few 8-inch cardboard cake rounds. I ended up using one for each cake layer, and then reusing some of them as they became available. You'll see what I mean.

You'll want a nice 12-inch square board for the cake to sit on. It needs to be nice, because it will be used as a presentation platter for the cake. It also needs to be something that you don't mind drilling a couple of holes into. On that note, you'll also need a 5/8-inch dowel to cut up. You'll want one more board, a circle, about 5 or 6 inches across. This one doesn't have to look so nice, but it does need to be food-safe, and again, you'll be drilling a couple of holes in it. You'll also want some screws.

Since I didn't have any power tools at my disposal, I talked to my father-in-law, whom I knew did. As it turns out, he had just finished installing a hardwood floor in one of the rooms of his home, and he had some scraps. We used this for both boards, with the intent of covering the circular one with plastic wrap.

You'll also want a few wooden skewers. I ended up using lots of them. Toothpicks just aren't long enough for what you're going to need them for.
